Iranian Director Mohammad Rasoulof Sentenced to Five Years in Prison: Cannes Film Festival Competitor’s Fate Revealed

An Iranian court has sentenced the famous Iranian director, Mohammad Rasoulof, whose new film will be in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, to five years in prison, according to the source. his law on Wednesday.

The lawyer, Babak Paknia, said on the platform “X” that the director, who won several awards at international festivals, was sentenced to flogging, fined, and confiscation of their property . Official Iranian media did not announce the decision.

He said that the court issued a prison sentence of eight years, five of which can be enforced, explaining that this decision was confirmed on appeal on an unspecified date.

Muhammad Rasoulof (52 years old) was arrested in July 2022, for promoting demonstrations that began after the collapse of a residential building in May of the same year in southwestern Iran, which killed more than 40 people.

After this tragedy, a group of Iranian leaders led by Rasoulof published an open letter in which they asked the security forces to “lay down their weapons” in the face of national discontent by “corruption” and “incompetence” of officials.

In the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which begins on May 14 in the south of France, Rasulov’s new film “The Sacred Fig Seed” was among its selections.

Rasulov won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2020 for his anti-death penalty film “No Devil”.

He was invited to the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 as a member of the jury, but was unable to attend due to a travel ban.
