The British actress also played the role of Desiree Armfeldt in the play A Little Night Music, for which she received the prestigious Tony Award in 1974. It has been awarded since 1947 by selected theater workers and journalists in various fields of theatre, musicals and drama.

In this stage play, she also sang the song Send in the Clowns, which was written by composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim to fit her husky voice. However, she did not play in the film of the same name from 1977, Elizabeth Taylor deprived her of this role.

Johns was known as a perfectionist in her profession — precise, analytical and headstrong, the AP recalls. The roles she accepted had to be multi-dimensional. Anything less meant she wouldn’t give it her all.
