Bordeaux Stabbing Incidents Timeline: A Look Back from 2019 to 2023

2019

September 29, 2019. A 24-year-old young man from Charente-Maritime, on a trip to the Gironde capital, was killed with a knife in a fight which broke out in the street on a Saturday evening, Place Saint-Projet, in the city center.

When they arrived on the scene, the firefighters, quickly joined by a Samu team, were unable to revive the young man, stabbed in the heart. The brawl, which apparently broke out following a refusal to give a cigarette, left three other victims: two young men aged 18, seriously injured, and another man aged 29, slightly injured. Three people were arrested: a woman and two men aged 28, 25 and 32, all homeless.

October 20, 2019. Shortly after midnight, Place Fernand-Laffargue, while a group of people have just left a bar and are chatting quietly, an individual passes by and utters derogatory words. In the group made up mainly of young Asian women, a man responds and receives a serious stab in the thigh in return. Actively sought by the police, the attacker fled.

Around 4 a.m. then, during a brawl on rue Cabanac, in the Paludate district, a 24-year-old man was stabbed in the back.

November 18, 2019. Two men were injured with knives and machetes in two places in Bordeaux during the night from Saturday to Sunday. A 19-year-old young man was first attacked with a machete, shortly after midnight near Cours Victor-Hugo. He is slightly injured. It was then in the Paludate district, rue Cabanac not far from the La Plage nightclub, that another attack occurred, around 4 a.m. This time, it was a 24-year-old who was stabbed in the back.

November 24, 2019. Around 5 a.m., a young migrant from the Maghreb was fatally injured on the Quai des Salinières by gunfire and stabbing, in the chest and abdomen. Deposited at the Bordeaux University Hospital, with another young man, by a car which then left, this unaccompanied minor died shortly after his arrival. Two people were arrested the next morning, at a rest area south of Bordeaux, while they were heading towards Spain. The hypothesis of a settling of scores against a backdrop of drug trafficking is considered.

2020

The summer of 2020 which followed the first confinement, particularly tense, was marked by a series of stabbing attacks in the city center. Between the end of June and the end of July, there were around thirty, including six just for the night of June 24 to 25.

May 15, 2020. The brawl, fueled by alcohol, occurred on a Friday evening around 8 p.m., on the Charles-de-Gaulle esplanade in the Mériadeck district between two men belonging to two groups of homeless people. Seriously injured, a 45-year-old man was transported to Pellegrin hospital in a state of absolute emergency. He received several stab wounds to the back and chest.

June 10, 2020. A 19-year-old young man is attacked and stabbed twice in the night, while he tries to come to the aid of a young woman being bothered by a group of strangers in a street in the city center, Quai Louis- XVIII. The police quickly arrested a suspect, placed in custody and immediately brought to justice.

June 22, 2020. This time it was in the Nansouty district that a young man was injured, around 10:30 p.m., rue Bertrand-de-Goth. Several individuals came to blows for an unknown reason and one of them was injured in the abdomen and one hand by a stab. The victim, rescued by firefighters, was evacuated to hospital. The attacker fled. Police opened an investigation.

June 24, 2020. Around 1:15 a.m., another 17-year-old teenager was seriously injured by a stab wound during a fight that occurred on rue des Boucheries, near Cours Victor-Hugo, in the heart of the city. Rescued by firefighters, he was transported to the hospital in a condition considered serious. The police intervened and opened an investigation.

On the night of June 25, 2020, firefighters intervened in particular on the alleys of Bristol, in Quinconces.

June 25, 2020. Another night marked by stab wounds in the city center, in the Saint-Michel, Quinconces and Victoire districts. In just two hours, between 11:30 p.m. and 1:30 a.m., firefighters carried out six interventions to rescue seven people injured and transported to hospital, including five in serious condition, in contexts that police investigations will need to be clarified.

June 26, 2020. Arriving by tram from the left bank, a young man of 27 got off at the Stalingrad stop, late in the afternoon, around 5:30 p.m. While waiting, he received several stab wounds. Seriously injured in this violent brawl which involved unaccompanied minors, he was evacuated by firefighters to the university hospital.

Bordeaux: several brawls this weekend in the city center

Several fights took place during the night from Saturday to Sunday, notably on the Quai des Salinières and the Quai Louis-XVIII. A knife attacker was also referred for attempted intentional homicide. He is one of the perpetrators of the brawl that occurred late Friday afternoon at Stalingrad Square.

July the 5th. A new street fight with a knife broke out around 4:30 a.m., near the Quai Louis-XVIII in Bordeaux between several homeless people, leaving two injured, one hit in the chest, the other more lightly in the arm . The protagonists of the brawl are all unaccompanied minors or young foreign adults. The fight reportedly broke out following the theft of a Bluetooth speaker.

July 18. On the night of Friday July 18 to Saturday 19, following an altercation with a motorist, a young man was stabbed twice in the back, Place de la Victoire in Bordeaux. Rushed to the emergency room, the injured man had to be operated on.

July 26. Around 12:40 a.m. Sunday morning, a crowd movement caught the eye of police officers on patrol, near the reflecting pool in Bordeaux. A young man was stabbed in the side.

September 1st. Around one o’clock in the morning, a TNBA actor and his companion were returning home from the Saint-Michel district when they were violently attacked with a knife, twice, towards rue de Tauzia, then rue Pierre-Loti, next door from Saint-Jean station. One received a stab wound to the left shoulder which left him with 14 stitches, plus eight more deep. The knife passed two centimeters from the carotid artery. The second is injured in the face. The attackers robbed them of their cell phones and their bags.

2021

February 26, 2021. Around one o’clock in the morning, two young people were injured by stab wounds, Cours Pasteur. While they were taking part in a clandestine party, they went out into the street to get some fresh air. Two teenage girls are arrested. They had approached them to offer them cocaine. Having received a refusal, they returned armed. With their alleged accomplice, they were indicted for attempted homicide and imprisoned.

23 mars. Quai de Bacalan in Bordeaux, two alcoholic individuals seriously injure a bus passenger in the face and neck with knives to steal his cell phone.

June 21, 2021. Around 2:30 a.m., a 35-year-old man from Bordeaux was seriously injured by a stab wound on the public highway, near the “Sainte-Catherine” tram stop, Cours Alsace-et-Lorraine in Bordeaux. The 30-year-old actually received seven stab wounds in the back. The facts were criminally qualified as attempted murder.

August 23, 2021. In the middle of the afternoon, on rue Sainte-Catherine in Bordeaux, a thirty-year-old Moroccan meal delivery man was stabbed in the face and in one hand. His attacker, also a young Moroccan, fled before being arrested eight days later. They had gotten confused, insulted and threatened a few days earlier over a… refused cigarette.

2022

May 22, 2022. Around 9 a.m., a young man was discovered unresponsive on Place André-Meunier in Bordeaux, his body stabbed with half a dozen stab wounds. The victim was injured in the head and sides. His attacker, an Algerian in his thirties, was sentenced on January 10, 2024 to a seven-year prison term.

December 21. On the night of New Year’s Eve, around 4:30 a.m., a violent brawl broke out on the Lawton quay, at Bassins à flot. Two men were injured by several stab wounds, one seriously. The perpetrators of the attack, two brothers aged around twenty, heavily intoxicated, were arrested and tried.

2023

July 23. At the beginning of the afternoon, a man armed with a knife stabbed a woman in her vehicle parked in front of the Darwin ecosystem, Quai des Queyries in Bordeaux, after having tried to injure a man a few moments earlier. The attacker fled towards the Chaban-Delmas bridge. The police found him a few minutes later, between the Quai de Brazza and the Quai des Queyries. He was hospitalized in a psychiatric facility.

1st November. On Halloween night, two groups of young people clash in a bar on the Lawton quay, at Bassins à flot. The brawl continues on the sidewalk. Three 19-year-old students were injured with nine stab wounds by a young 18-year-old apprentice cook who was heavily intoxicated. One of the two victims hospitalized suffered six stab wounds. His vital prognosis is in jeopardy. The attacker flees. Quickly found and arrested, he was sentenced to three years in prison, two of which were suspended on probation.
