In Bolivia, more than 2,000 agents are hunting a fugitive cocaine trafficker from Uruguay. According to local authorities, the drug lord has traveled the world to avoid his arrest, but they would now be on his heels. The Interior Minister, Carlos Eduardo del Castillo, reports that a series of raids have been carried out in the Santa Cruz department, in the center of the country.

“We have mobilized more than 2,250 police officers and deployed more than 144 vehicles,” said Del Castillo. “We have now performed more than 23 operations, conducted six raids and we have arrested 12 people.” So far, 17 rifles, a handgun and 2,000 bullets have been seized. The police also seized an unknown number of bulletproof vests and 31 vehicles.

The target of the large-scale manhunt is 32-year-old drug lord Sebastián Enrique Marset Cabrera. He is wanted in his home country of Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil and the United States in connection with drug trafficking. He is believed to be in Santa Cruz with his wife and three children. The interior minister expects his arrest within hours.

Marset Cabrera was still in prison in the United Arab Emirates two years ago, because he was arrested there with a false Paraguayan passport. However, with genuine Uruguayan documents he was able to be released.

He is said to have arrived in Bolivia last September. For a fugitive drug offender, he had a pretty loose life there, and it doesn’t seem like he was trying very hard to blend in. He is said to have even bought a professional football club.

Authorities accuse Marset Cabrera of being one of the most powerful drug traffickers in southern South America. He is said to have transported several tons of drugs through Uruguay and according to Colombian President Petro, he was behind the murder of a well-known Paraguayan anti-mafia prosecutor, Marcelo Pecci.
