BMW ConnectedRide Smartglass: Head-Up Display for Motorcycles

A few years ago, a head-up display was considered a luxury even in passenger cars. But then the technology projecting important data directly onto the windshield spread and today it can be found even in relatively cheap models. After cars, it was now the turn of motorcycles, at least those from BMW workshops.

At first glance, they look like normal motorcycle goggles, but in reality they are a head-up display. BMW refers to its novelty as the ConnectedRide Smartglass connection, and it will cost 690 euros, i.e. almost 16.5 thousand crowns.

Their operation is actually quite simple. Information about the current speed, the selected gear, the speed limit in the given section, as well as real data from the navigation, including the direction of travel, are projected directly into the driver’s field of vision.

For navigation, the user can choose whether he wants to see only a basic arrow with the direction of travel, or detailed information including, for example, street names. The glasses also include a light sensor that helps with the clarity of projected information.

The glasses are connected to the motorcycle via a mobile phone through a special application and Bluetooth. The condition is that the motorcycle can be paired with the phone, this is the only thing that actually limits the types of machines with which the novelty can be used. It is also possible to set the exact location where the information is projected.

According to BMW, the battery in the glasses lasts ten hours, after which they need to be recharged. In addition, they are supposed to adapt to different face shapes and fit under various helmets. “The glasses can also be dioptric,” explains BMW Motorrad’s vice president for customers, brand and sales Stephan Reiff at the German manufacturer’s event for journalists, where the mentioned glasses had their premiere. The maximum is 4.5 diopters, the glasses can then be adjusted directly at the optician using the RX adapter.

Reiff further boasts that there will be two sizes on offer so that everyone can really use them. Smaller for pupils between 53 and 67 millimeters, larger for between 59 and 73 millimeters. BMW supplies two sets of lenses with the rims: one has 85 percent transparency and is primarily intended for use in helmets with an integrated sun visor. The second ones are solar, so they have a significantly higher degree of toning.
