Bird Flu Outbreak Found in Europe, France Alert

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Government French declared alert for a bird flu outbreak that spread throughout Europe. France will increase the requirement for poultry to be kept indoors.

“Since early August, 130 cases of bird flu have been detected in wild animals or on farms in Europe,” the Ministry of Agriculture said in a statement.

Three cases have been identified among backyard birds in northeastern France. “Therefore, strengthened precautionary measures will be implemented to protect poultry farms.”

Poultry farming is preferred indoors. Meanwhile, outdoor farms are still being considered.

Elsewhere in Europe, Dutch authorities last week ordered commercial farms to keep all livestock indoors. This step is due to the spread of bird flu in farms.

In the winter of last year, France culled about 3 million birds in its duck-breeding region in the southwest. At that time France was grappling with the spread of the virus bird flu from wild birds to flocks of birds.
