Big Sun Versus Planets, Satellites, and Stars in the Universe

JakartaSun is the center of the solar system which has the largest mass and size of all objects in the solar system. Do you know how big the Sun is when compared to the planets, satellites, and stars in the universe?

The sun, which is 4.6 billion years old, has a mass of 1,989 x 10 to the power of 30 kilograms. This single star has a volume of about 1.41 x 10 to the power of 18 cubic km and a radius of about 696,000 km.

Big Sun Versus Objects in the Universe

Quoted from the Bosscha Observatory post, Bandung Institute of Technology @bosschaobservatory, if the volume of the Sun is likened to a bag, then you can put this many planets and satellites into the sun:

Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. Jupiter is more than twice as large as all the other planets in the solar system combined, and 11 times as massive as Earth NASA. Well, can you imagine how big the Sun is if the largest planet in the solar system can fit 1,000 pieces if it enters the Sun?

Earth is the fifth largest planet in the solar system. Even though it seems less big than other planets, the earth accommodates 7.9 billion humans on its surface, you know. If there are 1.3 million Earths that can enter the Sun, can you count how many trillions of people can enter the Sun?

If the earth were the size of a marble, the sun would be a sphere 1.1 meters in diameter. Very big, yes.

The moon is Earth’s only natural satellite, in contrast to Jupiter, which has thousands of natural satellites orbiting it. Although alone, the presence of the Moon has many benefits, including helping to stabilize Earth’s motion and regulate Earth’s climate.

The Moon is 3.7 times smaller than Earth. With its size, there are 64.3 million moons that can enter the sun. That’s a lot, huh?

On the other hand, although the sun is the largest object in the solar system, there are many stars that are larger than the sun and bright enough to be seen at night. Some of them are:

Sirius Star.Sirius Star. Photo: Wikimedia Commons–

Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky at 1.71 times the size of the sun. Sirius is also known as Alpha Canis Major or Dog Star. This binary star in the constellation Canis Major is bright because of its component, a blue-and-white star that is 25.4 times brighter than the sun. Encyclopedia Britannica.

Blue stars are hot stars. Sirius’s surface temperature is 9,940 degrees Kelvin (K), 4,000 degrees K higher than the Sun. The name Sirius comes from a Greek word meaning ‘shiny’ or ‘burning’.

Antares Star. The Antares star nebula. Photo: Wikimedia Commons/Martin Bernandi–

Antares is a cold red star 680 times the size of the Sun. Antares’ chromosphere (the layer above the star’s surface) is 2.5 times the radius of Antares, while the Mahahari’s chromosphere is only 1/200 the radius of the sun. Earth Sky.

Antares is relatively colder than other stars, at 3,400 degrees Celsius (C). Meanwhile, the sun has a temperature of about 5,800 degrees C. But because it is so large, the light of the star Antares is very bright, which is 11,000 times brighter than the Sun.

Antares can be seen in the northern sky during summer nights and in the southern sky during winter nights. This star is also called Alpha Scorpio and Scorpion’s Heart, the brightest star at the heart of the zodiac constellation Scorpius the Scorpio.

Well, so Sun which can contain just 1.3 million Earths is still 680 times smaller than the universe’s star Antares, and other stars. If only the sun was that small in the universe, let alone humans on earth, okay? Come on, take advantage of our time in the universe by learning and being happy!
