JAKARTA – Many ways are done to lose weight or diet . One of the most common is the carnivorous diet.

This diet is similar to low-carb diets such as the ketogenic and paleo diets. However, due to limiting most or all sources carbohydrate this is much more extreme.

Registered dietitian and nutrition researcher at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Amy Goss, PhD, says the reported benefits of a carnivorous diet are compelling.

Unfortunately, there is not enough evidence to draw conclusions about the health outcomes of this diet.

However, in a 2021 survey of more than 2,000 people on social media who follow a carnivorous diet, few participants reported symptoms of nutritional deficiencies.

Nutritionists recommend a less restrictive diet. Some of these include the DASH or Mediterranean diet which offers a wider variety of nutrients including fiber, key vitamins and minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients.

“Foods that are high in fiber, high in antioxidants, high in vitamins and minerals tend to be good and reduce a lot of that in a carnivore’s diet,” says Megan Poczekaj, RDN, LD.

A high-fiber diet is associated with a lower risk of chronic disease and better GI health. Another concern is vitamin C and the risk of scurvy.

“When it comes to lowering carbs and cutting back on processed foods, I have a lot of clients who come back and they say they feel better, but it doesn’t have to be extreme,” says Fran Blackman, a registered dietitian at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Research results linking a diet high in meat, especially red and processed meat, with negative health outcomes, can lead to coronary heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer — including colon cancer, esophageal cancer, and stomach cancer.
