In the past 18 months since the start of the pandemic, there have been reports of human trafficking and abuse in large-scale fraud operations in Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia.

A VICE World News investigation in July found that the industry is likely responsible for defrauding tens of thousands of people each year for billions of dollars.

Employees are hired from China, Taiwan, Malaysia and even Vietnam. They are lured with false promises of well-paying customer service jobs.

On a daily basis, they are threatened with violence and forced to work long hours, defrauding Internet users with various schemes.

Last year, Hieu launched the non-profit “ChongLuaDao” initiative. Aims to fight phishing scams in Vietnam. A large team of over 20 cybersecurity experts has already blacklisted nearly 9,000 malicious domains used for money fraud or theft of personal information.

Hieu also collects information on fraud groups in Cambodia, violence, financial reporting, organizational structure, and the types of scams they run, such as investments, fake e-commerce sites, and online gambling.

“When I got home from prison, I thought why there are so many fake and fraudulent websites in Vietnam and where they come from. I did a lot of research and gathered information. And then I realized it’s not a joke, it’s something very serious “, reveals Hieu.

Over the past year, Hieu has been contacted by the victims and raided these scam operations. “I have so many photos and videos of abuse. If I showed it to you, you wouldn’t be able to sleep,” says Hieu.
