Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski remains “open” about his future amid Chelsea links

Just over a week after breaking Gerd Muller’s Bundesliga scoring record for Bayern Munich, Robert Lewandowski joined up with the Polish national team in Opalencia in Nowy Tomyśl County, Poland for their training camp ahead of the European Championships.

Even before his record-breaking season, Lewandowski was one of the, if not the, most sought after strikers in Europe along with Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, and his achievements for Bayern this season have a bevvy of clubs queuing up to get the chance to convince him to leave Bavaria.

In a recent interview with French television outlet Canal+ (via Sports picture) at Poland’s training camp, Lewandowski said that he was keeping his options open as far as his future is concerned. Of course, he still has a contract at Bayern until June 2023, but he doesn’t want to keep anything off the table. “I’ll stay open! I like to learn new languages ​​and cultures. But even I don’t know whether that will happen in football or after my career. I feel good at Bavaria, the city is great and the club is great,” Bayern’s number 9 explained.

Bayern’s front office have ruled out any possibility of a potential transfer for Lewandowski this summer, remaining adamant he will see out the rest of his contract with the club. However, he had questioned Bayern’s transfer strategy on multiple occasions, including before the start of this past season. He has big ambitions of wanting to win the Champions League again, so he was critical of Hasan Salihamidzic’s strategies in the transfer market, granted, it was the first summer window in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, so funds were at a minimum. Lewandowski had also been critical of Bayern’s lack of signing high caliber talents a few seasons ago when he was flirting with a potential move to Real Madrid, spearheaded by his agent, Pini Zahavi.

At 32 years of age, the next contract Lewandowski signs will be the last big one of his playing career, so Zahavi is eager to have a meeting with Bayern’s front office to discussions their options. Bayern don’t want to let him go prior to 2023 but Zahavi clearly has other ideas for his client. His dream move had always been Real Madrid, but there have also been links with Chelsea earlier this month.

It was reported earlier this month that Chelsea’s chief Marina Granovskaia had made contact with Lewandowski over a potential move to Stamford Bridge (Football365). Former Bundesliga players Timo Werner and Kai Havertz both transferred there over the summer and just lifted the Champions League title, beating Manchester City 1-0 in Porto, Portugal. For Lewandowski, it goes without question that when he does leave Bayern, he will want to be the number one striker wherever he goes, so at Chelsea that would complicate things for Werner and Thomas Tuchel. Not to mention, it’s uncertain how much longer Olivier Giroud will be staying in London. In that sense, an eventual move to Spain seems like it would be more likely for Lewandowski, and at Madrid, Karim Benzema’s contract expires in June 2022, one year before Lewandowski’s expires at Bayern.
