Barcelona will reserve women, in future calls to access the Civil Guard official corps, 40% of the available positions, that is, the maximum allowed by the amendment of the local police law carried out this year by the Parliament. The objective is to gradually correct the current disproportion. Of the 2,736 officers who are part of the Barcelona Urban Guard as of today, 85.79% are men and 14.21% are women.
This gradual rebalancing policy can be carried out this year, in which 282 new places have been called to join the body. If after passing all the entrance exams and exams, 40% of the new recruits are women, they will represent at most 16.59% of the total.
The modification of the local police law of 1991 approved this past April and which had direct contributions from the Barcelona City Council establishes that the places reserved for women must be between 25% and 40% in each call. Barcelona, in this first opportunity, has already opted for the maximum allowed.
Growing interest
This positive discrimination criterion will cease to be applicable, according to the same law, when the proportion of women in the police force is equal to or greater than 33%. That goal, obviously, is still far from being achieved, but the interest of women to be part of this profession is growing, according to the data available to the Barcelona City Council. In 2010, only 6.40% of the applicants to join the body were women. That figure has been increasing year after year and, In the last call, open in 2019, the applicants were already 28.02% of the total.
In order to be able to access this 40% quota, the essential previous step is to hold all the fixed access tests beforehand. Once the approved list is available and from the score of each one of them, in the event that women do not represent that 40% set as a goal, the criterion of positive discrimination will be applied, with some exceptions. If the score obtained by the applicant is more than 15% lower than that of a man, she will not obtain the place.
