Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – HMD (Human Mobile Device) has been launching feature phones and smartphones under the Nokia brand. However, now HMD is ready to launch cellphones under its own brand umbrella without any Nokia frills.
At the MWC 2024 event, HMD announced that it would launch a Barbie-themed foldable cellphone. It seems that HMD wants to steal attention by riding the trend of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film.
HMD is collaborating with Mattel, the company behind the Barbie doll, to present a cellphone with a vintage and trendy style in mid-2024.
“This cellphone will bring a vintage feel from a brand that upholds women’s empowerment, with a touch of pink and of course sparkle,” wrote HMD’s official statement, quoted from CNBC International, Tuesday (27/2/2024).
Furthermore, HMD said that Barbie’s foldable cellphone would not connect to the internet. So, this cellphone will bring nostalgia to Barbie lovers from the past.
In the United States (US), the trend for dumb phones as the antithesis of smartphones is booming again among Gen Z. The reason is, Gen Z feels the need to limit their time consuming digital content on popular platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
For your information, HMD was founded in 2016 by former Nokia executive Jean-Francois Brall. HMD bought the Nokia license, which was successful in the 1990s, then sank because it was unable to compete with Android and iPhone.
Since being under HMD, the company has launched feature phones and smartphones again. Unfortunately, Nokia smartphones still cannot compete with new players.
