Trump’s Absence and the Significance for the Republican Party Debate

On the night of Thursday, at 03.00 Norwegian time, the stage is set for another TV debate about who will lead the Republican Party in the USA.

At the debate, which is being held in California, seven potential presidential candidates are ready to prove that they are ready to lead the party to victory in the next election.

Former President Donald Trump will not attend.

Not only did he drop the first televised debate, it is now also clear that he will not take part in the second round.

Instead, he does as his political nemesis, President Biden, and travels to Detroit to address striking auto factory workers.

So – what is the significance of Trump’s absence from the debate when he already has a large lead?

– Has committed fraud

– Less important without Trump

– The TV debates have had no particular effect.

This is what US expert Hilmar Mjelde tells Dagbladet. He believes that the only person who has profited from the TV debates in the nomination election is Nikki Haley, who has advanced by 3-4 percentage points in the polls.

At the same time, there is nothing that threatens the former president, we are to believe Mjelde. He says that Republican voters still like Trump, and still see him as their president – a president in exile.

– The TV debates become less important when Trump does not participate.

These participate in the debate:

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis South Carolina Senator Tim Scott South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley Biotech investor Vivek Ramaswamy Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum Former Vice President Mike Pence

The debate will be held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.

In order to take part in the debate, the candidates must have received at least 3 percent support in two national polls, or in one national poll and two previous polls. Candidates must also have over 50,000 unique supporters, with at least 200 in 20 states.

The participants in the debate must also sign that they support the party’s final presidential candidate. Trump has refused to do this.

At the same time, he says that the situation can change quickly in the last four to five weeks before the nomination elections in Iowa and New Hampshire.

– It has happened before, for example with John McCain in New Hampshire in 2000, says the expert, and continues:

– However, I see no signs of such a thing right now. As of today, Trump seems unbeatable.

Donald Trump leads by a good margin in the nomination battle, and has already given clear signals that he is ready to fight to become president again.

Trump has received far more votes than necessary to participate in the debate, but has according to New York Times refused to sign that he will support the Republican candidate regardless of who it will be.
