The Public Prosecution Service (OM) suspects a 24-year-old man from the municipality of Schagen of child abuse. The man was a babysitter for at least eleven families with babies and toddlers. He would have committed and filmed lewd acts in at least one family.
The man was a babysitter throughout the Netherlands, the police and the Public Prosecution Service report to it ANP. He offered himself between 2019 and May 2023 via Marktplaats.
According to the police and judiciary, he had an “attractive rate”. He probably instilled confidence in the parents through photos in which he can be seen in a police uniform. But the man had never been employed by the police. He did the Enforcer Supervision and Security (HTV) training and was then allowed to watch in the police profession.
The man was arrested in May after a report of suspicious behavior. That report did not come from one of the babysitting families.
Data carriers, such as computers or USB sticks, were seized in his house. A special vice team of the police found images of child abuse in one of the babysitting families on those data carriers. The team also found other child pornography and animal pornography.
The suspect would have forwarded the images of the abuse to another suspect. The 38-year-old man from Alkmaar has also been arrested.
‘Crosses all boundaries you can imagine’
The babysitting families were informed by the police this week. These are families from the municipalities of Molenlanden, The Hague, Zoeterwoude, Hollands Kroon, Dijk en Waard, Zaanstad, Den Bosch, Tilburg, Overbetuwe and Nieuwegein. They receive help from Victim Support and the GGD, among others.
Corien Fahner, deputy chief public prosecutor in North Holland, says that abuse and child pornography cases are always intense. “That someone abuses a babysitter hits you terribly.” According to her, the fact that the suspect would have presented himself in police clothing to apparently inspire confidence “crosses all boundaries you can imagine”.
The man is due to appear in court on September 4. The second suspect is still in custody. The lawyers of both the 24-year-old and the 38-year-old have announced that they do not want to respond substantively now.
