Avoid Covid, Apple Supplier Asks Employees to Sleep in Factory

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Apple and Samsung supply factories in Vietnam made extreme decisions to keep the industry running and minimize the spread of Covid-19. They asked for thousands of sleep jobs in factories.

According to a Bloomberg News report, this happened in the northern provinces of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang, which are the main manufacturers of Samsung and a leading supplier of Apple. Authorities say 150,000 live in the factory area to reduce the risk of infection.

Meanwhile, in the commercial center of Ho Chi Minh City, 22 companies with 25,000 workers set up accommodation, quoted from 9to5Mac, Wednesday (7/7/2021).

Bloomberg says thousands of employees sleep on bunk beds with bamboo mattresses and cots in a large hall. They were also quarantined until they tested negative after returning home.

According to reports, about 400,000 vaccines have been administered to employees of other global suppliers including Samsung.

Vietnam had managed to contain infections at the start of the pandemic, but finally escalated in April. Finally forced the northern industrial area of the main fabricators of AirPods products, namely Foxconn Technology Group and Luxshare Precision Industry Co. to be closed.

Local authorities and the factory, including Luzhare, have also cooperated. Even though factories force employees to stay overnight, employees still have to be tested every week.

“It significantly helped the spread of the virus and allowed factories to resume operations quickly,” said Nguyen Dai Luong, chairman of the Viet Yen district People’s Council.

Foxconn undertakes to cooperate with local authorities and comply with all health requirements. Luxshare did not respond to a request for statement.

The fact that employees of Apple’s supplier factories cannot go home is very different from what happened at Apple Park. Employees expressed reluctance to return to their offices in Cupertino.
