Supernova (beeld Alyssa Goodman, Harvard & Smithsonian)

In the direction of the constellations Perseus and Taurus, there are two gas clouds in which new stars are formed. Because we view the universe from one point (the Earth), it is difficult to see how the three-dimensional distribution of gas clouds is. From our perspective, the two clouds appear to merge, but new measurements from the Gaia space telescope, among others, show that they are actually 500 light-years apart.

By accurately measuring the movements of the gas, astronomers were able to get a 3D perspective of the star-forming clouds Perseus and Taurus (bull), and a number of other gas clouds in the region. The image that emerged was of a large, relative ..
