Average Commute Times and Mobile Phone Fines in Saudi Cities: Riyadh Leads in Longest Drive

Riyadh- How long does it take people on average to get from their place of residence to their place of work in Saudi cities? The Saudi survey portal also revealed how many people are fined for using mobile phones while traveling. Between cities, Riyadh has the longest drive between work and residence. While 59% of people in the city of Riyadh take more than half an hour for their daily commute to work, only 35% take more than half an hour in Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah.

A survey conducted by the National Center for Public Opinion Polls (RAI) under the King Abdulaziz Center for Cultural Communication noted the difference in travel time from home to work according to population density in major cities and governorates.

The situation in other small cities, governorates and villages is different from the cities of Riyadh, Jeddah, Makkah, Dammam and Madinah. Less than 27% of the population needs to spend time in the big cities to work there. 79% of the 1,500 men and women surveyed in early February said they started their work between 7am and 8am. 29% of these people face the distressing experience of being undeservedly overtaken at exits and traffic signals.

18% say they face unpleasant experiences from others due to excessive speeding and 14% face difficulty due to frequent lane changes. According to last year’s estimate, 23% of people were fined for using a mobile phone while driving. The majority of fines are recorded while on the phone and 35% come between looking at Google Maps. 80% of drivers experience being overtaken by others while queuing in U-turns and busy lines. 21% said traffic congestion could be reduced by making the country’s public transport more efficient, while 17% said the use of vehicles by foreign workers should be restricted.
