Australian Government Uses Dangerous Tactics

CANBERRA – Government of the Prime Minister (PM) Australia Scott Morrison implemented “dangerous election tactics” with his comments about joining United States of America (US) in any war over Taiwan . This was revealed by the spokesman for the foreign affairs of the opposition party.

Australian Defense Minister Peter Dutton earlier this month said it was inconceivable that Canberra would not join the US in military action if China attack Taiwan. The democratically-ruled island is seen by Beijing as a wayward province.

Foreign affairs spokeswoman for the opposition Labor Party, Penny Wong, said Dutton’s comments were part of the government’s strategy for elections to take place before May 2022.

“Raising the prospect of a war against a superpower is the most dangerous electoral tactic in Australian history – a tactic used by irresponsible politicians who are desperate to retain power at all costs,” Wong said in a speech at the Australian National University. Reuters Tuesday (11/23/2021).

Wong said Taiwan was the biggest risk to stability in the Indo-Pacific region, and any conflict there would be a disaster for humanity.

Wong said the Morrison government had in recent weeks sought to portray the Labor Party as pro-China.

Relations with China, already shaky after Australia banned Huawei from its nascent 5G broadband network in 2018, grew cold after Canberra in 2020 called for an independent investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, which was first reported in central China in 2019.

China responded by imposing tariffs on Australian commodities, including wine and barley and limited imports of Australian beef, coal and wine, moves the US has described as “economic coercion”.
