Aurora Jupiter Is More Brilliant, This Is Why

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Among the planets in the solar system, including Earth, for the aurora business at their respective poles, it turns out Jupiter has the most brilliant aurora. When compared to the aurora on Earth, its brightness reaches 100 times.

The results of a new study, it turns out that the polar light comes from a unique source, namely space lava. This was revealed from Juno’s Mission NASA which arrived on the giant planet in 2016. The Jupiter reconnaissance spacecraft found no sign of electric current at the poles.

Scientists gathered observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, which mapped brightness aurora Jupiter, and compared it with Juno’s measurements of the planet’s magnetic field and the electric currents passing through it.

Jonathan Nichols, an astronomer at the University of Leicester who led the new study, said the results confirmed the link between Io’s volcanic eruption, electric currents in Jupiter’s magnetic field, and auroras. Io is one of the moons of Jupiter.

Space lava takes a loop-the-loop trip around Jupiter. The study has been published in the January issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics.

The journal report describes the process as a tug-of-war between Jupiter’s magnetic field and Io’s space lava plasma. Jupiter’s magnetic field initially pushes the plasma away from the planet, but as matter moves further away, it can’t orbit fast enough to keep its distance. Instead, it travels along Jupiter’s magnetic field lines, back to the planet’s poles, cycling through Jupiter’s upper atmosphere.

Astronomers have observed auroras on seven planets in our solar system. The result, they look like aurora in general. However, Jupiter’s auroras are very strong, thanks in part to the volcano Io. Juno, which is still flying around Jupiter and its moons, could tell scientists more about the planet’s amazing auroras.
