In the 1960s, he co-founded the magazine Index, and since the 1970s he has focused mainly on theater dramaturgy, and after the fall of communist totalitarianism, also on pedagogical work at the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts (JAMU) and other universities. Plešák was born in 1943 in Bzenec in the Hodonín region. He studied theater science and the Czech language. For most of the 70’s and 80’s he worked as a dramaturg of the theater in Zlín, later as a dramaturg of the National Theater in Brno. He has collaborated with a number of acclaimed directors, for example in Brno with Zdeněk Kaloč on a cycle of dramatizations of Dostoevsky and Zbyněk Srba on productions of Czech classics. From 2003 to 2006 he was the artistic director of the Municipal Theater in Zlín.

Plešák has been working at the Brno Theater Faculty since 1990, mainly as a teacher of acting and later dramaturgy. He was a long-time vice-rector of JAMU. He edited some publications published by the Brno Academy. In 2011, he received the Brno City Award for his contribution to Brno journalism.
