ASF crisis for arable farmers – this is how you protect yourself from lockdown

The federal government had already reorganized the Animal Health Act and the Federal Hunting Act in 2018 in order to be able to take quick action in the event of an outbreak of ASF. The Animal Health Act regulates how the loss of animals is compensated. In addition, the losses due to possible harvest bans and the mandatory creation of hunting aisles are also determined. However, it also states that the federal states can pay further compensation to the affected farmers.

Brandenburg’s Agriculture Minister Axel Vogel said: “In the event of crop failures, the affected farmers would receive compensation from the State Disease Fund. However, there is no lump-sum compensation for production losses ”. A claim to compensation will be closely monitored by the country, it is said – and that may take time in view of the ongoing disease.

Gisela Reetz, State Secretary for Agriculture from Saxony, therefore demanded: “We need nationwide regulations as soon as possible for additional expenditures by businesses in restricted areas and values for compensation that farmers should receive in the event of an ASF outbreak in their region.” The costs calculated in the Animal Health Act for compensation in the event of a harvest ban in the amount of a loss of profit margin were then included:

– 449 euros / ha for silage maize,

– 596 euros / ha for grain maize,

– 768 euros / ha for rapeseed,

– 691 euros / ha for common wheat,

– 1,450 euros / ha for sugar beets
