Wear Red Day Celebrated at Ascension Providence Hospital in Waco
Heart Attack Survivor Shares Her Story
WACO, Texas – To kick off heart month, Ascension Providence Hospital in Waco honored Wear Red Day, inviting a heart attack survivor to share her story.
A Sudden Experience
Last year, Tami Nutt, a 46-year-old woman, was attending a church event with her family when she suddenly experienced fatigue and clamminess.
Despite her discomfort, Nutt recognized the alarming combination of her symptoms and immediately suspected a heart attack.
She recounted, “It wasn’t some dramatic effect; it was kind of like a headache and feeling nauseous, coupled with a twinge in my shoulder. But it was the combination of all these symptoms that made me realize it was a serious issue.”
Quick Thinking Saves a Life
Luckily, Nutt’s swift response played a crucial role in saving her life. “I’ve paid attention to the ‘Go Red for Women’ signs of a heart attack in women, but I never thought I would need that knowledge for myself. I’m so grateful that I did,” Nutt shared.
A Unique Diagnosis – Broken Heart Syndrome
Doctors diagnosed Tami’s heart attack as Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, or broken heart syndrome, which can be triggered by intense emotions or traumatic events.
Expert Commentary
Her cardiologist, Dr. Buck Cross, affirmed that Nutt’s proactive actions saved her life. “We stabilized her in the hospital, prescribed the appropriate cardiac medications, and now she’s doing very well,” Dr. Cross explained.
Be Proactive for a Healthy Heart
Nutt emphasized the importance of proactively managing both physical and mental well-being to catch symptoms early. “It’s crucial to pay attention to all areas of our health, and that’s something I’ve been intentionally doing in the past year,” she said.
Act Fast, Save Lives
Dr. Cross believes that quick thinking can prevent fatal conditions. Recognizing symptoms, seeking immediate medical attention, obtaining swift and accurate diagnoses, and receiving prompt treatment are all vital steps in effectively combating cardiac emergencies, as exemplified by Nutt’s case.
Maintaining Heart Health
Experts like Dr. Cross advise consistent monitoring of crucial markers such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar to promote a healthy heart. Additionally, limiting habits like smoking and excessive drinking can further enhance heart health.
30 Days of Heart Program
The American Heart Association has introduced a ’30 Days of Heart’ program that guides individuals in completing tasks and developing habits to improve heart health.
