NOS Nieuws•vandaag, 14:12

The police have arrested thieves in the port of Rotterdam for the fourth night in a row. It involved eleven men from Belgium and the Netherlands. They were probably trying to pick up drugs from the port area.

Nineteen people were arrested last night, including six minors. They were in an empty container that had been delivered within the gates of the port. A female attacker was also arrested for the first time.

The police cooperated with customs and security. According to them, it is impossible to say whether the thieves were looking for the same load of drugs for the fourth night in a row.

Persistent problem

Young people removing smuggled drugs from containers in the port of Rotterdam are a persistent problem. Figures for the past year are not yet available, but it is expected that there will be many more than in 2022, when 251 people were caught. According to the Public Prosecution Service, these are mainly young people from vulnerable families.

The suspects are also getting younger on average. Of the more than 200 outbursts in the first half of last year, 63 percent were younger than 23 years old. In 2022 that was 45 percent. The percentage of underage offenders also increased: from 8 to 15 percent. It almost always involves cocaine.
