DIJON: New provisions for the access of people with disabilities to exhibitions at the cultural center of the Cité de la Gastronomie

Following the opening of the International City of Gastronomy and Wine on May 6 and on the eve of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, the City of Dijon is making exhibitions accessible to people with disabilities. .

On the eve of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the International City of Gastronomy and Wine of Dijon inaugurates the operation of accessibility devices in its exhibitions on Friday 2 December.

By the end of the year, they will allow people with visual, hearing or mental disabilities to visit all the exhibitions that tell about the gastronomic meal of the French. Visiting tools adapted to the specific needs of each person will be offered free of charge.

Exhibitions for everyone

Beyond the physical accessibility of all the exhibitions for people with reduced mobility, the ambition of the City of Dijon was to equip itself by the end of 2022 with additional tools that would make it possible to make the exhibition itineraries accessible to people with visual impairments , auditory or mental disabilities.

The gastronomic meal of the French is a social practice deeply rooted in our history and yet perennial in the life of each of us, an art of living which is characterized by the attention paid to dishes, tableware, gastronomic conversations or food-pairings wine but also from the taste of conviviality and sharing.

The very nature of this gastronomic meal of the French and the values associated by Unesco with intangible cultural heritage, under which figure their inclusive character, their ability to be transmitted from generation to generation, thus providing a feeling of identity and continuity , obviously justifies the taking charge of the City of Dijon on the subject of accessibility for all to the cultural spaces of the City.

Browse, watch, listen, touch…

Accessibility to places of culture is a regulatory obligation for all our structures open to the public but, above all, it is a problem for our society.

The notion of accessibility goes far beyond physical accessibility to exhibition spaces. The measures in place today will allow anyone with a disability to take full advantage of the exhibits.

The main tools used to take into account the diversity of audiences and disabilities are the following:
– All exhibition stands are subtitled in French for the hearing impaired.
– LSF video tour of the exhibitions downloadable for free on the Izitravel platform.
– Tactile kits associated with audio-described itineraries are available at the reception for assistance to the visually impaired.
– The booklets in FALC (Easy To Read and Understand) of the 4 exhibitions can be downloaded from the Cité website but also available at reception in paper form to accompany visitors with mental disabilities so that they are independent in their visit.

They accompanied the implementation of accessibility measures

– Maud Dupuis-Caillot, Agence Polymorphe Design orchestrated the development of the tools,
– Dominique Berucat as well as the members and volunteers of the Les yeux en promenade association were kind enough to come and try the tactile kits and written audio description visits with the support of Véronique Werver,
– Olivier Calcada of Vice-et-versa, Sigolène Brun of Synchrones interpreter and the Elitimage agency worked on the production of all the LSF videos,
– the workers of the FALC workshop of ESAT in Lyon accompanied by Charlotte Durand produced the booklets in FALC; the workers of the FALC workshop of the ESAT in Montbard made it possible with their test visits to further improve these instruments.
