Sofia Haley Marks was arrested yesterday in New York in connection with the alleged overdose death of teenager Leandro Anthony De Niro Rodríguez (19), the actor’s grandson Robert De Niro.
Marks, a 20-year-old, was arrested last night for federal Drug Distribution Charges, police sources told NBC News. was prosecuted by New York Police Department (NYPD) detectives and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents.
Marks is expected to appear in federal court on Friday. NYPD said officers found De Niro Rodriguez unconscious when they responded to a 911 call on Wall Street in Lower Manhattan. The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s mother, Drena De Niro, announced her son’s death on July 3 on Instagram. The city’s medical examiner has yet to determine a cause of death in the case, but she said that he passed away after being sold pills.
“Someone sold you pills laced with fentanyl that they knew they were mixed up and still sold them,” Drena De Niro wrote. “So for all these people still f— buying and selling this s—, my son is gone forever.”
Veteran actor Robert De Niro provided a statement announcing the death of his grandson, saying: “I am deeply distraught over the death of my beloved grandson Leo. We are very grateful for everyone’s condolences. We ask that we be given privacy to mourn the loss of Leo.”
All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that can be used to mix drugs such as cocaine or heroin and produce an effect up to 50 times stronger.
In April it was announced a new strategy of the administration of President Joe Biden against the trafficking of fentanyl which includes plans to prevent the distribution and sale of the final product, as well as the money laundering through legally established companies.
In January the local authorities announced that during 2022 in NYC there was a record seizure of fentanyl pills equivalent to 72 million fatal doses. “Fentanyl saturates the supply of illegal drugs in New York City and is a factor in approximately the 80% of deaths due to overdose. Even casual or occasional use of illegal drugs could be fatal, and with an explosion of counterfeit fentanyl-containing pills, a single tablet purchased online or on social media could be deadly,” Bridget G. “Fentanyl is the single most significant threat to our public health and public safety,” said special agent Frank Tarentino (DEA) then. “It’s poison…. This is just the tip of the iceberg. At least 43 cases of fentanyl overdose, seven of them fatal, are linked to two separate patterns of robberies at nightclubs in and around Manhattan dating back to September 2021.
In 2022, the municipal authorities of New York launched a controversial campaign on public transport with “advice” to consume fentanyl “safely”, which some described as counterproductive and irresponsible.
