Argentina is strengthening security at airports and the US embassy due to Iranian tensions

The Argentine government has increased security at its airports, borders and the United States embassy in Buenos Aires as tensions erupt between the United States and Iran, the South American Defense Minister told local media on Monday.

Argentina, which suffered two attacks in 1992 and 1994, decided to raise its alert level days after a US drone strike, which killed the Iranian military commander Qasim Soleimani in Iraq, which raised global concerns about retaliatory attacks.

Defense Minister Agustin Rossi also told local news website “Infobae” that due to the history of the two attacks that we suffered from, Argentina should be on alert for this type of conflict around the world.

More than 100 people were killed in two attacks in Argentina in the 1990s. In 1992, the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires was attacked by a car bomb, killing 29 people.

Two years later, a truck loaded with explosives exploded outside the center of the Jewish community, killing 85 people.

Argentine courts also blamed the attack on Iran, but no one was brought to trial in either case.

Iran has denied playing a role in either of the attacks.

In the United States, New York City, another frequent target of attacks, was preparing to avenge Iran with the police on high alert, but officials had not seen any imminent threats.
