Apple’s New M3 Chip Series: Revolutionary Advancements in Performance, Graphics, and AI

M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max are Apple’s new chips, presented during the Scary Fast event, on Monday (30). The line is made up of the first PC processors built using the 3nm (nanometer) architecture. The M3 series will debut on the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, as well as the 24-inch iMac. Among the main highlights is the evolution of the graphics card components.

New graphic features

The new M3 family brings hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading to the Apple system for the first time. Broadly speaking, this adds more realistic lighting and reflections and the ability to render more complex geometries to the system.

Ray Tracing is an advanced rendering technique used in computer graphics to simulate the way light interacts with objects in a three-dimensional scene in order to create realistic images. Combined with the new graphics architecture of the M3 series, the feature allows professional applications to offer up to 2.5 times the speed of the M1 family of chips.

Mesh shading is a tool that focuses on optimizing the rendering of 3D meshes on graphics units. More precisely, the feature significantly affects geometry processing in computer graphics, making it more efficient and flexible, which allows for more visually complex scenes in graphics-intensive games and applications. According to Apple, the M3 GPU offers the same performance as the M1 graphics card at just over half the power and up to 65% more peak performance.

CPU improvements

The performance cores have gained architectural improvements in the CPUs of the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips. This means that Apple’s new series of chips can even better handle computing tasks that demand high processing power, optimizing the overall CPU performance in scenarios that involve multitasking and parallelism.

Aiming for better energy use, Apple also improved the efficiency cores in its new processors. Designed to be used in light tasks that do not require high performance, the efficiency cores of the new M3 line are up to 50% faster than the efficiency cores of the M1, which can allow for longer system battery life.

The improvements include the hardware architecture that is built from three nanometers, instead of the 5 nm process of the M1 and M2. According to Apple, together these cores are capable of delivering a CPU that achieves the same multithreaded performance as the M1 while using only half the power and up to 35% more performance at maximum power.

AI Resources

Apple’s new chips also have an improved neural engine to speed up machine learning models. This is the M3’s Neural Engine, which handles AI tasks, being up to 60% faster than M1 chips. Additionally, all three chips in the new series feature an advanced media engine that provides hardware acceleration for the most popular video codecs, including H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW. This engine also finally supports AV1 video decoding, which should make streaming AV1 content more power efficient.

M3

Composed of a total of 25 billion transistors, the M3, the most basic chip in the family, has five billion more than its predecessor, the M2. The processor features an eight-core CPU, made up of four performance cores and four efficiency cores, and can reach a speed 35% higher than the company’s first generation processor chip. The GPU, in turn, has a total of 10 cores, which promise 65% faster graphics performance compared to the M1.

M3 Pro

The intermediate model of the family has a total of 37 billion transistors, increasing the number available in the M1 Pro by 4.3 billion, which translates, according to Apple, into a 30% higher processing speed. Compared to the most basic version of the M3, the M3 Pro has much more processing power. This is because it offers a total of 12 CPU cores, six for performance, six for efficiency and a GPU with 18 cores.

M3 Max

Designed to achieve the performance needed in the most demanding professional workloads, the M3 Max boasts a total of 92 billion transistors, 25 billion more than the M2 Max and 35 billion more than the M1 Max. Apple states that, In total, the M3 Max is twice as fast as the M2 Max and 2.5 times as fast as the M1 Max. In terms of graphics, the most powerful chip in the family has a GPU with 40 cores, which generates 50% graphics performance. higher compared to the M1 Max. In the CPU, in turn, there are 16 cores, 12 for performance and four for efficiency, which make the processor 80% faster than the M1 Max.
