Apple TV + discovers that movies can be paid for

Apple TV + subscribers may well see more films in the coming months. Apple’s streaming service, after betting everything on TV series, discovered that films, too, could generate success and subscriptions. The box of Greyhound, the war film starring Tom Hanks, forced the thinking heads of the streaming service to reconsider their strategy, in a certain urgency to read between the lines of FastCo.

Now, Apple TV + is trying to win a dozen films per year, or roughly one per month. Between two and four of these films would be blockbusters to the Greyhound, Emancipation, Antoine Fuqua’s next feature film with Will Smith ($ 120 million all the same) or Killers of the Flower Moon, the next from Martin Scorcese. According to a source on the site, the Apple would have sent the message to Hollywood that it buys big movies.

Apple TV + has never really lost sight of films: in 2018, the service made an agreement with studio A24 (to which we owe Moonlight) to produce feature films. And we were entitled to Still and The Banker, for example. But very clearly, the platform first put the package on the prestige series. Despite their qualities and the stars summoned to the bedside of The Morning Show or See, it is ultimately a film that ended up beeping Apple TV + on the spectators’ radar.

Despite this new interest in films, Apple TV + does not want to be like Netflix whose catalog of feature films casts a wide net, from festival work to Roma or The Irishman to the excellent B series Lost bullet, through soft-porn 365 Days. But if the Apple platform remains in its “indie” or high-end niche, it is to be expected that it will put more hand in the pocket to land the rights to headlines.

However, no question of stopping TV series. Just yesterday, Apple put his hand on the episodic thriller Shining Girls with Elisabeth Moss.
