Apple Considers Turning to LG for Smartwatch Screens

Jakarta: A few days ago, it was reported that Samsung was accelerating the development of microLED panels for smartwatches, and some believe that Apple will use these panels for the next generation of the Watch Series.

However, recent reports say that LG Display will also be involved as a supplier of the next generation Apple Watch Series screen panels. Industry sources cited by GSM Arena said LG Display had prepared an operational division for the panel.

In addition, the LG Display division manufactures rear panels for microLED screens in small batches. Production of the panels will start in the second half of 2024, so the first Apple Watch with a microLED screen should launch in 2025.

This information contradicts recent reports on Samsung’s microLED production, as analysts believe that LG’s competitor will be ready to supply its screen panels as early as 2024.

This allows Samsung to use the same technology in its Galaxy Watch line, before supplying Apple with its microLED panels. In addition, Apple also likes to use a diverse supply chain.

Thus, Apple is expected to reach an agreement with the two South Korean companies and introduce a smartwatch with support for microLED panels in 2025.

Previously, the latest Bloomberg News report indicated that Apple is considering the idea of releasing a MacBook with touch screen support. Currently, Apple is reportedly testing a touch screen MacBook that has the opportunity to be released in 2025.

The touchscreen MacBook Project is currently in the early stages of development, and the rumored MacBook OLED will be the first Mac with a touchscreen. This laptop will carry the standard MacBook design but with support for touch screen capabilities.

Meanwhile, Apple uploaded a proxy at its 2023 Annual Shareholders Meeting and the 113-page report reveals that CEO Tim Cook will get a pay cut in 2023.

The reduction that Cook will receive is USD 35 million (IDR 536.8 million), to USD 49 million (IDR 751.6 million), down from the USD 84 million (IDR 1.3 trillion) he received in 2022.
