Remember: Last January, dataminers and leakers circulated images suggesting that Forge would be one of the new playable characters in Apex Legends. Since then, we have seen the character being murdered by Revenant, who was the real new character.
And if the Forge rumor was brought down in this way, it was not for nothing, and it was not a back-up plan for the developers ofApex Legends. Indeed, chief designer Jason McCord said Forge was clearly designed to somewhat deceive information hunters with a little humor. See what he says to Dot Esports :
It started as a fun way to hijack the dataminers who, at the time, felt like they had discovered our next legend and ruined our surprise. We actually deliberately leaked bogus concepts and details from the Forge kit in the patches, so there were traces when we announced it. It’s pretty crazy, really. (…)
The idea is to be credited to the designer Rayme Vinson, and it likely succeeded, especially during the trailer where Revenant assassinated Forge. Thus, Respawn used a clever means to disturb the players, although annoyed by the multiple leaks.
