Another 300,000 face masks ordered for hospitals thanks to donation campaign | NOW

While the first 100,000 masks are still underway from China, a group of entrepreneurs from Hoorn is already busy with a further batch of a total of 300,000 masks. They hope with a donation to reduce the shortage of protective equipment in hospitals.

The first 100,000 mouth masks will be distributed to several hospitals on Monday and the next 300,000 mouthguards will arrive at Schiphol at the end of next week.

“We are doing well, but it is still not enough”, says Sun Walenkamp, spokesman for the group of West Frisian business owners. “Every day, over 100,000 masks are needed in hospitals alone.”

On Friday morning, an amount of over 175,000 euros had already been raised with donations. It costs about 1.50 euros to get one face mask to the Netherlands.

You can donate via the website

Several large companies, both national and regional, have already indicated that they want to contribute to the donation campaign. For example, Action sponsors 100,000 mouth masks and they also arrange transport free of charge. Private individuals can also give money via doneereenmondkapje.nl.

The entrepreneurs themselves do the work for the donation action completely selflessly. “When you see that a disaster is going to happen and there is a shortage of necessary material, we want to do something about it,” Walenkamp said about it on Tuesday.

If sufficient donations are received, the West Frisian entrepreneurs can also order a third batch of face masks in China.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
