Anderlecht bans public alcohol consumption in three quarters …

In the center of Anderlecht and the districts of Cureghem and Rad-Bizet, it is forbidden from 1 July to September to drink alcohol on the street. Mayor Fabrice Cumps (PS) made that decision after complaints about nuisance.

The local police have received numerous complaints in recent months from residents who noted that alcohol consumption in public places caused a lot of nuisance. This includes disturbance of the order due to inappropriate behavior or fighting, but also cleanliness problems.

The new police order prohibits the consumption of alcoholic beverages in Kuregem (roughly between the South Station and the Bergensesteenweg to the Aviation Square), the center (Wayezstraat, Verzetsplein, Dapperheidsplein, Lindeplein and Astridpark) and Het Rad-Bizet (between Félicien Ropsstraat, Bizetplein and the main roads of the garden district Het Rad). Anyone who breaks the rules will receive a GAS fine of 50 euros.

‘With this decision, we want to respond to the demand of local residents whose quality of life suffers too often from the behavior of people who drink too much. By offering our local police this legal instrument, we give the population the opportunity to live together in peace and enjoy the summer in their neighborhood, ‘says Mayor Cumps.

The prohibition does not apply to consumption on terraces of cafes, restaurants and other catering establishments or at events permitted by the municipality.
