an overview of Belkin’s iPhone stand

This is one of the flagship new features of macOS Ventura: with the next major version of the Mac system which was presented in June, it will be possible to use the iPhone camera to make videoconferences on FaceTime . The Continuity feature on the camera, or Continuity Camera in VO, allows the iPhone to lend its sensors to the Mac, whether it is a MacBook whose webcam is of poorer quality or a desktop Mac which does not have a webcam.

There is no need for a specific accessory to take advantage of this feature (a simple tripod is enough), but Apple has collaborated with Belkin to create a small tool that allows you to fix the iPhone on the screen of its Mac to get the best viewing angle. Ahead of the release scheduled for this fall, Belkin sent a demo copy to the youtuber Brian Tong which shows us all the subtleties:

The accessory sticks to the iPhone thanks to the magnets of MagSafe, and then there is a small fixing system to be rotated to hang the assembly on the screen of a MacBook (another model will be marketed for devices thicker like the Studio Display or the 24-inch iMac). The Mac normally recognizes the iPhone instantly and automatically switches to its wide-angle.

There are options to enable Portrait mode, Studio Lighting mode, or even the Center Frame feature that tracks the user’s face thanks to the iPhone’s ultra-wide angle. Finally there is the mode Desk View which allows you to show a double view with both your face and what is happening on the desk just in front of the computer; the quality obtained with the ultra wide-angle and a software adjustment to straighten the angle of view is on the other hand very markedly down.

The release date of this accessory has not been announced, but it should logically coincide with the release of iOS 16 and macOS Ventura this fall. No price has yet been communicated.
