Amsterdam City Council agrees with a general ban on fireworks NOW

The City Council of Amsterdam on Thursday approved the plans to announce a general fireworks ban this year. Amsterdam is therefore the second largest city after Rotterdam where fireworks are no longer allowed to be lit.

On Thursday afternoon a motion from the Party for the Animals was adopted, which was also signed by D66, GroenLinks, the Party of the Elderly and the PvdA. The VVD, Bij1, DENK and SP groups also voted in favor. Only the CDA and FvD voted against.

The municipality of Amsterdam goes further than the policy of the cabinet, which recently decided to ban arrows and bangers. In Amsterdam, no more consumer fireworks can be fired, with the exception of asterisks.

Mayor Femke Halsema will prepare an enforcement plan in the coming months, reports Het Parool. Fireworks shows and various smaller events should seduce young people not to mess around on New Year’s Eve.

Maintaining becomes difficult without a prohibition of sale

According to Halsema, it will be difficult to enforce the prohibition against firing, certainly because there is no national ban on the sale of fireworks.

The adopted motion also states that the municipality must try to limit the sale of fireworks within the municipal boundaries. In a “route planner” that Halsema had sent to the city council earlier this week, she writes that she wants to try to reduce the number of permits for fireworks shops.

The Rotterdam City Council already agreed at the end of January on a plan for a total ban on fireworks in the city. Only the parties CDA, Leefbaar Rotterdam and the PVV were against the ban.
