Amazon plans to hire 100,000 additional people due to high demand from corona | NOW

The online department store giant Amazon needs a lot more employees to cope with the extra demand caused by the corona virus. Due to the virus outbreak, many more Americans are ordering things like groceries online, causing the company to temporarily hire 100,000 additional people, Amazon writes in a blog post.

Amazon mainly focuses on Americans who worked in the hospitality, travel and entertainment sector, but are now out of work for a while because, for example, their restaurants have been closed due to the virus outbreak.

“We want to let these people know that they are welcome to join us until life returns to normal and their previous employers can take them back,” said Amazon.

This will mainly involve workplaces in distribution centers of the online department store giant. To make the picture slightly attractive, Amazon also temporarily raises the minimum salary by 2 dollars (1.79 euros) to 15 dollars per hour. The temporary salary increase will cost the company $ 350 million worldwide.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads through sneezes and cough drops. The virus can be transmitted directly from person to person or (for a limited time) through surfaces such as door handles.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Nearly all deaths involve the elderly or other frail, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
