Dresden – Excitement in Dresden-Friedrichstadt: After a World War II bomb was found on Friday, thousands of residents had to leave their homes. The danger has now been eliminated!

According to the police, construction workers found a 250-kilogram American-made bomb on a property on Fröbelstrasse on Friday at around 2:25 p.m.

The officers began cordoning off the area as quickly as possible.

Specialists called in from the ordnance disposal service decided that evacuation measures were still necessary on Friday evening.

The all-clear followed on Saturday morning: the World War Bomb was defused!

At precisely 6.15 a.m., the ordnance disposal specialists reported that they had removed the two detonators from the bomb. The 250 kilo explosive device will now be brought to the central collection point in Zeithain and disposed of there, according to reports from the police and the fire brigade.

Since there is no longer any danger, all evacuation measures and roadblocks are to be reduced again. “All residents can return to their homes,” reported the police on Twitter.

The Friedrichstadt freight yard, which was particularly heavily bombed in World War II, made up a large part of the affected area.

All people who live within the red marking (see picture) were affected by the evacuation. It was an evacuation area of ​​around 800 meters from the site.

That means: In the area between Berliner Straße, Burgkstraße / Lübecker Straße / Ebertplatz and Freiberger Straße, residents were asked to leave their apartments.

A total of 7,400 people in 565 addresses were affected.

Around midnight, around 190 police officers were on site alongside fire brigade, rescue services and the THW. The Dresden Police Department was supported by officers from the Saxon riot police and officers from the Federal Police.

Observe corona measures in emergency shelters

An official emergency shelter has been set up for people who do not have the opportunity to stay with friends at short notice. According to the Dresden police, this is in the 56th secondary school (Aachener Straße 10). There is also an emergency shelter for people who are in quarantine or who show symptoms (35. Oberschule; Clara-Zetkin-Straße 20).

The city of Dresden announced that the Energieverbund-Arena is available as further emergency accommodation for people without corona symptoms or quarantine. The emergency accommodation could be reached by shuttle bus. At around 2 a.m., the fire brigade pointed out that the emergency accommodation in the Energieverbund Arena was overloaded and that the other two emergency accommodation had to be used.

It was important to note that entry and stay are currently only permitted if you have brought your own mouth and nose cover.

When it came to evacuation in Dresden, memories were awakened on May 22, 2018, when a British 250-kilo bomb was discovered during construction work in Löbtau.
