TELEMUNDO 47 AND NBC 4 NEW YORK COMPETITIVE GRANT PROGRAM “PROYECTO INNOVACIÓN” OPENS IN 2021 WITH INCREASED FUNDING

FORT LEE, NJ – (January 8, 2021) – NBC 4 New York/WNBC, Telemundo 47/WNJU and the Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation Innovation Project Grant Challenge return for the fifth year in a row.

“Our nonprofit community regularly fills in important gaps and helps when the need is critical. Project Innovation funds support these important services, and WNJU looks forward to awarding another round of grants through this year’s competition,” said Cristina. Schwarz, president and CEO of Telemundo 47.

“Over the past four years, WNBC and our partners have awarded nearly $1 million in Project Innovation grants to worthwhile nonprofits in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. These funds helped educate people for new careers, continued vital services during the COVID-19 pandemic, and inspired our students in and out of the classroom.We are thrilled to kick off this year’s campaign and look forward to awarding another round of grants to organizations that make our community a better place to live, work, learn and raise a family,” said Eric Lerner, President and CEO of NBC 4 New York.

Eligible local nonprofits whose programs are helping solve everyday community problems in any of the following four grant categories are encouraged to apply online. Grant categories include:

  1. Community Involvement: Programs that allow people to participate and volunteer in their communities.
  2. Culture of Inclusion: Programs that promote equitable access, opportunities, and resources for traditionally underrepresented communities.
  3. Next Generation of Storytellers: Programs that promote access and develop pathways for emerging talent, diverse voices, and underrepresented youth to explore careers in news, entertainment, sports, and the arts.
  4. Education and Youth Empowerment: Programs in and out of school that equip youth with the tools they need to succeed, including STEM/STEAM education and youth entrepreneurship.

Since 2018, Telemundo 47, NBC 4 New York and the Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation have presented a total of $990,000 in Project Innovation grants to 21 tri-state nonprofit organizations that are helping solve everyday problems in innovative and unique ways. This year, the stations and the Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation will award a total of $315,000 to up to 12 community organizations in each of the participating markets. Across all participating markets, a total of $3.475 million will be awarded to eligible nonprofits. Grant winners will be announced in the summer of 2022.

Project Innovation 2022 grants will be presented to eligible nonprofits in 11 participating markets, including New York (WNBC, WNJU), Southern California (KNBC, KVEA), Chicago (WMAQ, WSNS), Philadelphia (WCAU, WWSI ), Dallas-Fort Worth (KXAS, KXTX), Boston (WBTS, WNEU, necn), Hartford, CT (WVIT, WRDM), Washington, DC (WRC-TV, WZDC), Miami-Fort Lauderdale (WTVJ, WSCV) , San Francisco Bay Area (KNTV, KSTS) and San Diego (KNSD, KUAN).
