AirPlay on Mac, Mac as external display

This is one of the major new features of macOS 12 Monterey, which was presented earlier this week: the Mac will support AirPlay as a receiver. Clearly, the Mac will be able to be used as an external screen or as a speaker for other devices.

In terms of image distribution, it will be possible to broadcast from an iPhone or iPad with the Mac acting as a mirror or extended screen for applications that support this mode, such as Keynote for presentations or still Photos for slideshows. Apple did not say so during the conference, but it will also be possible to stream with AirPlay from another Mac. Again, it will be possible either to replicate the screen of the source Mac, or to use the second Mac as an external screen. Better yet, Apple precise that it will be possible to connect the two Macs by a USB-C cable to reduce the latency inherent in Wi-Fi networks.

Apple removed the target display mode from iMac models released after 2014: it is no longer possible to use Apple’s all-in-one as a simple external display. The arrival of AirPlay on the Mac is therefore excellent news to regain this functionality. Our colleagues from MacRumors warn that the result may not be perfect, since the video will be compressed, but it will be practical for some uses.

Note that the AirPlay feature on Mac will not be compatible with all devices supported by macOS Monterey. Apple announces availability of the feature on MacBook Pro (2018 and later), MacBook Air (2018 and later), iMac (2019 and later), iMac Pro (2017), Mac mini (2020 and later), Mac Pro (2019) , iPhone 7 and later, iPad Pro (2nd generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), iPad (6th generation and later) and iPad mini (5th generation and later). Older iPhone, iPad, and Mac models might work, but at a lower resolution.
