AI, digital tools give more control over Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s

The parties involved are also developing digital tools, such as apps and avatars, for people who already have the diseases. So that they are notified at home when the disease changes and care providers can intervene in time. The parties are setting up a new ICAI lab for this: AI-RONDO (Risk Profiling and Decision Support).

“There is already a lot of data available on people with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, two common brain disorders,” tells Marjan Meinders, one of the three academic directors of the AI-RONDO ICAI lab. “By applying digital tools such as AI algorithms and models, we can make new connections and, for example, identify groups that run an increased risk of developing complications.”

More control through enriched data

With this enriched data, people can receive treatment after diagnosis that is tailored to their personal risk profile. The researchers involved can also map out which signals – such as speaking softer, articulating less, a change in gait or heart rate – indicate that something is wrong. Meinders: “With such a signal, a healthcare provider can prevent worse.”

The research takes place in the ICAI lab AI-RONDO. ICAI (Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence) is a national network focused on technology and talent development between knowledge institutions, industry and government in the field of Artificial Intelligence. AI-RONDO is the twenty-fifth ICAI lab in the Netherlands and the second in which Radboud University, Radboudumc, imec, partners in OnePlanet Research Center, work together. In February this year they founded the ICAI lab AI for Precision Health, Nutrition and Behavior op.

Deployment of digital tools

AI-RONDO will also use digital tools to collect data in the home situation and to give the patient personalized advice. For example, an app, linked to a wristband, that provides insight into the course of symptoms over the day, linked to the intake of medication. Or an avatar, a virtual assistant, who has conversations with the patient and at the same time collects new data about the course of the disease from his speech.

Meinders about this: “This extra digital support – in addition to regular care – offers patients more information and insight into their own health. As a result, they have more control and can even slow down the disease process. “

Partners in OnePlanet

OnePlanet Research Center states that it wants to stimulate innovations in Gelderland. The agency works closely with companies and social organizations in the region. Various regional partners are already involved in AI-RONDO and the research team cordially calls on other interested parties to register as well. Current partners are: ANT Neuro, Artinis Medical Systems, imec-NL, InfoSupport, NIVEL, Noldus Information Technology, Orikami Personalized Healthcare, ParkinsonNet, Open Speech Technology Foundation and Virtask. OnePlanet Research Center is a multidisciplinary collaboration between Wageningen University & Research (WUR), Radboud University, Radboudumc and nano-technology company imec.

The partnership uses the latest chip and digital technologies to contribute to a society in which everyone can live healthily and has access to healthy and sustainably produced food. In just 1.5 years, OnePlanet went from a vision of creating a better future to an R&D hub; developing groundbreaking innovations! Disruptive, new technologies and domain expertise result in groundbreaking innovation processes for real-life applications. The research and innovation center is financially supported by the Province of Gelderland.

Previous digital initiatives

The Radboudumc announced in November 2020 to make care for patients with Parkinson’s or atypical Parkinsonism more person-oriented. To this end, the hospital has entered into a partnership with Philips for the use of the e-health platform Engage. “We want to improve the quality of life for people with Parkinson’s or Parkinsonisms. Much is already going well in our region, but in some areas things could be better ”, said Prof. Bas Bloem of the Radboudumc at the time.

earlier in april More than 30 partners, from universities to healthcare and knowledge institutions, social organizations, companies and Alzheimer Nederland announced a collaboration to put an end to Alzheimer’s disease. The ABOARD project – A personalized medicine approach for Alzheimer’s disease – was started for this purpose. The aim of this project is to prepare a future without Alzheimer’s, in which the disease is stopped even before the start. The radboudum is also participating in this.
