Afghan migrants tortured and thrown into river on Iranian border

In Afghanistan, a search has been launched for bodies of Afghan migrants in the border river Harirud. Iranian border guards tortured and thrown the migrants into the river to prevent them from entering the country. That’s what survivors say. Their statement has not yet been confirmed from an independent source.

The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched an investigation. According to the presidential palace, about 70 migrants have been tortured and thrown into the river. Doctors in a hospital in the city of Herat who examined five of the corpses say four of the migrants died from drowning.

The Iranian consulate in northwestern Afghanistan says they have not arrested Afghan citizens.

Settle account

An Afghan, who was part of a group of 57 migrants attempting to cross the border, says they were all tortured and then driven into the river. Another survivor of this group says that at least 23 of the 57 died.

The Governor of Herat tweeted to the Iranian authorities: “Our people are not just names you throw in the river. One day we will settle the bill.”

More often torture

According to Afghan border guards, it is not the first time that the Iranian border police have tortured and killed Afghans. The border between the two countries is 920 kilometers long.

About 2,000 Afghans from Iran cross the border to Herat every day. Among them are many people infected with the coronavirus. Iran has been hit hard by the corona epidemic.
