Afghan Female Activist Shot Dead, Prime in Taliban Era

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

A female activist, Frozan Safi, was shot dead by unknown parties in Afghanistan. This is the first shooting of a female activist in Afghanistan since Taliban in power.

The Guardian reported that Safi had been missing since 20 October. Officials confirmed Safi was dead after identifying his body at the Mazar-i-Sharif City morgue.

“We recognized him (Safi) from his clothes. The bullets had crushed his face. There were many bullets in his body. Too many to count, in the head, heart, chest, kidneys and legs,” said Safi’s sister, Rita, who is also a doctor.

He also said that Safi’s engagement ring and the woman’s purse had been taken.

Rita then told me that Safi began to disappear at the end of last October. At that time, Safi received a call from an anonymous number asking him to collect documents related to his work as an activist.

According to Rita, Safi was also promised a safe place. Safi, who at that time was asking for protection from the Germans, believed the news and decided to leave the house.

“We don’t know who killed him,” said Rita.

Safi’s father, Abdul Rahman Safi, said his son’s body was found in a pit not far from the city. His son’s body was not recognized by the hospital.

Meanwhile, local Afghan media, Rukhshana, reported that the Taliban security forces took the bodies of two other women to the Balkh Provincial Hospital on Thursday (4/11).

A doctor at the destination hospital, Meraj Faroqi, the two women died from being shot. However, Faroqi stated that until now the identities of the two women were still unknown.

Balkh Provincial Director of Information and Cultural Affairs, Zabihullah Noorani, said the bodies of the two women were found along with the bodies of two men in a house in Mazar-i-Sharif. He said the police were investigating the murder.

“This could be a personal feud,” said Noorani.

This killing made the Afghan people even more afraid of the Taliban’s rule, considering that previously several people associated with the Afghan government had been killed.

Since the Taliban came to power, the group has promised inclusive governance and protection of women’s rights. However, some consider the promise to be mere talk, given that the Taliban still restricts women, such as not being allowed to work and go to school.

As a result of these restrictions, some women chose to move and hold demonstrations to demand equality in the era of the Taliban rule.
