Actor Rudy Morren makes a career switch, but that has financial consequences: “You can live from acting, but write books?” | Art & Literature

Literature“You can live on acting. But writing books? No, I do not think so.” And yet Rudy Morren (57) stops his acting career to be a full-time writer. If we still see him on screen, it will be in reruns.

Actor Rudy Morren, known for roles in ‘Spoed’, ‘Familie’ and ‘Danni Lowinski’, has radically changed his life. After both his debut ‘Wild meat’ and his latest thriller ‘Snow Track’ were bombarded with rave reviews, he has now decided to end his acting career.

“I don’t feel the need to act now,” says Rudy. “And I couldn’t do it anymore, to be honest. Writing demands a lot from me, I could not fully surrender to a role. ”

It is going fast for you as an author. You just won the Hercule Poirot Prize for best Flemish crime novel with ‘Snow Track’.

Great, of course. It could mean a lot to me. Because financially my career switch is a drama. You can hardly imagine that. You can live on acting, I know that. But writing books? No, then you really have to sell thousands of copies. Now I understand why fellow actors declared me crazy when I told them about my choice.

Are you currently living mainly on your savings?

Yes. I work on a book for a year, and if it goes well, I will earn several thousand euros. My publisher says I can’t give up. After a few years, I may be able to begin to reap the benefits of my hard work.

Does it take a lot of discipline to write a book?

I do it in a structured way, yes. From nine to half past one I sit in front of my computer, and then I do my research, so that I can start again the next day. I try to get through a thousand words in a day. That pace suits me, I’m already working on my third book. And for the fourth I already have ideas.

So you do not intend to retrace your steps?

Never say never. I may never earn the salt on my chips with it, then I will have to find another path. But I really hope it won’t be necessary.
