Accused of murder in Viana do Castelo detained in France after 7 years on the run

A man accused of shooting another man in Viana do Castelo in 2013 and who has been on the run since then has been detained in Nancy, France, the victim’s family lawyer told Lusa today.

Speaking to Lusa agency, Francisco Morais da Fonte said that the man, now 36, was arrested on the 16th in Longlaville, Nancy, and on Wednesday will be present to a judge at the Nancy Court of Appeal, who will decide “Extradition to Portugal”.

“Arriving in Portugal, the man will be constituted accused and a collective court will designate the new date of the trial”, he added.

The crime took place on January 15, 2013. The alleged murderer, Valdemar Silva, known by the nickname Nonó, ran away and, despite never having been located, was formally accused of committing a crime of qualified homicide.

The man “came to have a scheduled trial, but ended up being considered a contuma and the process has so far been suspended pending police authorities to locate the man on whom a European arrest warrant was pending,” he said.

“The victim’s family never gave up on the case. He fought in every way so that the man could be found and taken to the bar of the courts so that justice could be done ”, stressed Morais da Fonte.

The deadly victim, Jorge Matos, known by the 35-year-old nickname of Cuba, was shot dead, while his brother was seriously injured following a stabbing attack in the city of Viana do Castelo.

At the time, according to a PSP source, the two cases took place in different parts of the city center, between 11:10 pm and 11:25 pm, suspecting that they involved the same attacker, who ran away.

Both were transported to the Viana do Castelo hospital, but the oldest died.
