According to the police, demos in Freiburg are “largely peaceful” – Freiburg

After a quiet night on May 1st, left-wing demonstrators showed up in Freiburg on Friday. There were several rallies – including three bike demos.

First there was the rally of the pier in the morning, in which 80 to 100 people took part, according to the police. A bike demo with 600 participants also registered. The corona requirements such as keeping a distance and wearing a mouth and nose protector were observed in both demos.

According to the police, there were around 500 participants an hour later at the following non-registered “anti-authoritarian bicycle demo”, to which the “Anarchist Group Freiburg” had called.

Among other things, it was criticized that the restrictions in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic were particularly detrimental to people and refugees, while the established economy was generously subsidized.

Cyclist demo leads to traffic disruptions

The start was at 3 p.m. in the square of the old synagogue. The demo route, which led, among other things, over the ring around Freiburg’s city center, sometimes had traffic disruptions. The event ended with a final rally on the Sthlinger Kirchplatz. The police reported that there were “clarifying conversations” when participants did not wear a mask or when the minimum distance was not observed.

Another unregistered bicycle demonstration with up to 200 participants at times started around 8 p.m. at the Stadtgarten. During the demonstration
According to the police, there were occasional traffic disruptions and dangerous situations, especially with encounter traffic. The report from late Friday evening continued: “Despite repeated speeches by the police, the participants showed no willingness to cooperate. Announcements regarding the route and infection protection measures in the sense of the Corona Ordinance were ignored.” After the police repeatedly threatened to dissolve the assembly, the bicycle train disbanded at around 10 p.m.

For Saturday, May 2, more than half a dozen demonstrations have been announced throughout Freiburg’s city center throughout the day.
