Folding smartphone: The Motorola Razr’s display detaches from the case

Hopefully this is not a serial mistake: the US magazine Input Mag reports of bad experiences with the Motorola Razr. The magazine states that employees had been using the folding smartphone for a little longer than a week and that the display was already detached from the housing during this time. This happened exactly at the fold point of the smartphone.

Job market

  2. about grinnberg GmbH, Bocholt

So far the manufacturer has not responded to this report. Input Mag itself asked Motorola for an opinion. So far, the manufacturer has not responded. Other U.S. media have also asked Motorola for a comment, but have also received no response when they reported the incident. Therefore, the background to the incident is currently unclear. It would be conceivable that a one-off manufacturing error has occurred.

The folding smartphone, which had previously only been released in the USA, has rather been panned by several US media. The Verge doesn’t think it’s a good smartphone. It is very expensive, has only a mediocre camera and the special features of the folding device cannot convince. The hinge creaks and the display has bumps that interfere with use.

Razr in the fold and drop test

The US magazine Cnet had continuously folded the Razr smartphone with a machine and found that the folding smartphone broke after just 27,000 folding operations. Motorola states that the Razr smartphone folding machine is not suitable for this. The Cnet test is “no indication of what consumers will experience when using the Razr in the real world,

In addition, Cnet has subjected the Motorola Razr to several drop tests together with the Galaxy Z Flip. First, both smartphones were dropped onto a sidewalk from a height of about one meter. That should simulate a fall in which the smartphone falls out of your pocket.

The Motorola model showed a crack on the outside display, but the smartphone was still fully functional. In a second drop test, the smartphone was dropped from a height of one meter. The upper area of the frame on the Razr broke, the display remained undamaged. The third drop test simulated how a smartphone would fall if it slipped out of your hand when opened. With the Razr, the damage to the case was even greater and there were further cracks on the outer case. However, the Motorola smartphone was still usable, it opened and closed well.

At our Hands-on of the Motorola Razr we had raised concerns about the longevity of the folding mechanism. Dust particles can possibly get into the folding mechanism and under the display. Motorola plans to launch the Razr smartphone in Germany sometime in the first half of 2020. There is no more precise date than a German price. In the U.S., the folding smartphone costs $ 1,500.
