Abortion allegations: gynecologist accused of having abortion woman without her knowledge

A couple filmed an interview with a gynecologist with a hidden camera. He would have prescribed an abortion pill to the woman, while she wanted to keep the child.

She accuses her gynecologist, Dr Abdool Yusuf Boodhoo, of having prescribed her Cytotec tablet and made an injection, voluntarily terminating her pregnancy without her knowledge. Ameera Haujee, a 34-year-old resident of Plaine-Verte, says she has a video incriminating the doctor. She lodged a complaint against the gynecologist at the Plaine-Verte police station on Friday August 12 and is awaiting an appointment with the IT department of the police to file the video recording for analysis. The thirty-something maintains that at no time did she ask the gynecologist to have her aborted.

A mother of a three-year-old child from a first marriage, Ameera decided to start a new life on August 22, 2015. She married Abdool Hafiz Haujee, a 44-year-old trader. Some time later, she noticed that she hadn’t had her period for three weeks. On Thursday, August 4, she went to Dr. Boodhoo’s consulting room, rue Cité Laval, in Plaine-Verte.

“After I found out I was pregnant, I told Dr Boodhoo that I wanted to keep the child. He offered me an injection at the hip to bring my pregnancy to term. I agreed and he prescribed Cytotec for me. Li finn dir mwa bwar kat konprime by zour ek introduce de dan mo party intim ”, explains Ameera. But after having followed the medical instructions to the letter, the young woman begins to feel excruciating pain in the abdomen.

Blood clot

On Monday August 8, accompanied by her husband, Ameera returns to see the gynecologist around 10 p.m. He does an ultrasound and tells them that she had a miscarriage, the six-week-old fetus having turned into a blood clot. “Dokter-la dir mwa mo bizin iron kirtaz fold lives posib dan klinik ek li pou kout Rs 40,000. Mo mari ek mwa dir nou pena mwayen ek fer nou won enn papie pou amenn mwa lopital. Li refize ek dir ki lopital pa pou won bon tretman. “

Not having been able to raise the requested sum and the gynecologist not having provided adequate care, the couple decided to return to the doctor, with a hidden camera this time. “Mo finn paunch ki dokter fer his intansionelman pou kapav tir kas avek nou dan klinik. Samem mo finn anrezistre li ”, explains Yusuf, Ameera’s husband.

On the video, we see husband and wife declaring to the gynecologist that they have never requested an abortion and that they wanted to keep the child. For his part, Dr Boodhoo replies that he had prescribed Cytotec for an abortion.

As Ameera’s health deteriorated, her husband took her to the Plaine-Verte police station on Thursday, August 11. She denounces the gynecologist, before being taken urgently to the Dr AG Jeetoo hospital, where she undergoes a curettage. In the days that followed, she underwent another surgery. The thirty-something is still admitted to the treatment room.

Police have opened an investigation and are waiting for the medical report to decide what to do next. The investigators plan to summon the gynecologist.

Conflicts with the law

Dr Abdool Yusuf Boodhoo was found guilty of manslaughter after Bibi Taslimah Baba Saib, one of his patients, died of a caesarean section in 2005. He appealed against his conviction. He was released after posting bail. Since the death of Bibi Taslimah Baba Saib, he has been suspended from his duties at the hospital, but still works in the private sector.

Dr Boodhoo admits he made mistakes

Solicited, Dr Boodhoo refutes the abortion claims. However, he admits to having committed some professional misconduct. He claims that he was persuaded by his patient to prescribe Cytotec for voluntary termination of pregnancy. According to the gynecologist, the young woman was not pregnant when he did an ultrasound and the blood test indicated that there was a ‘weak pregancy’, which was difficult to detect. “I leave it to justice to shed light on this case. I am the victim. “
