It was recently revealed that the abbot of a temple in Sichuan Province, mainland China, had a relationship with a female anchor named Cai, and was blackmailed by the woman afterwards. Public information shows that Shi Zhaojie previously served as vice president of the Sichuan Buddhist Association and president of the Chengdu Pujiang County Buddhist Association. On December 20, 2022, the 20th meeting of the Standing Committee of the 12th CPPCC Sichuan Province reviewed and approved the list of members of the 13th Sichuan Provincial Committee of the CPPCC, among which Shi Zhaojie is a member of the religious community. On November 7, 2023, staff of the Sichuan Provincial Ethnic and Religious Affairs Commission confirmed that Shi Zhaojie had resigned as vice president of the Sichuan Provincial Religious Association.
On December 26, 2023, the website of the Buddhist Association of China released the “Announcement on Cancellation of the Ordinances of Buddhist Clergy of Shi Zhaojie”, saying, “Recently, I will receive a report from the Sichuan Buddhist Association about the handling of the ordination of Shi Zhaojie. Zhaojie’s Situation Report. According to relevant regulations, I will cancel the ordination of Shi Zhaojie (common name: Zhang Bin), and his ordination number is 20031307.” The ordination is issued by the Chinese Buddhist Association and is a clerical member’s ordination. According to the “Measures for the Qualification Recognition of Chinese Buddhist Clerical Personnel”, the decision to revoke the qualification of a clergy member shall be made through collective discussion by the Standing Council of the Buddhist Association where the clergy member is located, and shall be agreed by the Buddhist Association of the province, autonomous region, or municipality directly under the Central Government where the clergy member is registered.
