A wide cultural and entertainment program is expected on the weekends in Tērbatas Street / Article / LSM.lv

For the first time, Riga Municipality is implementing the idea of a summer street in the form of an experiment. From today for one month Tērbatas Street is dedicated to pedestrians, cyclists, mothers with prams and babies. The outdoor terraces of the cafes have been expanded and green plants have been brought. A cultural program with discussions and street music will be offered on weekends.

Pleases pedestrians and culture lovers

On Friday, July 17, Tērbatas summer street was solemnly opened with music for the brass band. The main change is that cars no longer drive on the street, but people walk. There are many terraces, flower pots and craft kiosks.

“It simply came to our notice then. It’s really nice to come, see and walk. Well, one-time at all! I like. It was needed a long time ago, ”says Viktors, who met on the street.

The idea of a pedestrian street in the big city, “addicted” to cars, is not new. They have been created in many places in Europe and also in Latvia. Furnishing works on Tērbatas Street are still in full swing. Road traffic is already closed and more and more pedestrians are occurring.

Outdoor cultural events, of course, in our age of distancing, are a good solution not only culturally but also humanly.

“Certainly such measures make sense, and it makes sense not so much to see what a city without cars could be like, but what a city could be like where people meet each other and are encouraged to talk to people they do not know and whose views and the vision is probably a little different, ”says Antonija Skopa, Chairman of the Board of Ascendum.

A series of four discussions on the portal Satori.lv on various aspects of city life will take place on Tērbatas Street, which is closed to traffic, with the participation of historians, philosophers and other cultural workers. Accidental passers-by are also invited to join the conversation.

Satori.lv discussion leader, philosopher Helmuts Caune says about the planned talks: “The topics are attempts to think about how we can better live together in cities in general and in Riga in particular. Tomorrow we start with the first topic, which is so generally philosophically, anthropologically, a bit provocatively – “Is the city a misunderstanding?”. Are cities friendly to people, or is it the best way for people to thrive and prosper and be happy. ”

“That’s why this experiment is being held. How we know how to treat this city will show who we are.

We will definitely be able to learn some important lessons, ”emphasizes Antonija Skopa.

A lot of work has been invested in landscaping and decorating the area. The police monitor compliance with security conditions at every corner. On social networks, you can read both enthusiastic comments about the possibility to finally enjoy a people-friendly environment in the city center, and criticism of additional congestion and congestion. But on Tērbatas Street, people have happy faces.

Along with changes in traffic organization, a wide program of cultural events has taken place on Tērbatas Street. “Every week the program is changing. Let’s say that tonight we will perform Carnival Youth (..) without the usual big stage, as we are used to seeing at events. In addition, there will be” Satori “readings, there will be Riga circus performances, there will be yoga classes , “outlines Eva Juhņēviča, Member of the Board of the Riga Tourism and Development Bureau.

Although it is unusual for Riga to be able to walk even in the middle of the street, a certain caution must be maintained, because cars still drive perpendicularly at intersections. Therefore, it is imperative to pay attention to the traffic light.

To get to the top of the craft market, Tērbatas Street has to be measured almost to the end, and several traffic lights have to be crossed.
