Football is the most popular sport in Ghana and has a tradition that goes back more than a century. The “Black Stars”, as the national team is called, reached the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup. Ghana is currently number 52 in the world rankings, has been four times Africa champion, twice U-17 and once U-19 world champion.
The “Accra Lions” around Rainer Kraft play in one of three groups in Division One, the second division under the Premier League. The association was only founded in 2015 and is a gathering place for talent, especially from West Africa. The game is played at the Accra Stadium, which gained notoriety in 2001. A bloody drama in the game between arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oaks and Asante Kotoku claimed 127 lives. pcs
