Bohdan Smoleń was born on June 9, 1947 in Bielsko, died on December 15, 2016 in Poznań. For years he was associated with the capital of Greater Poland.
The satirist’s monument was erected in the center of Poznań, on the square between Rybaki and Strzałowa Streets. Originally, it was supposed to be unveiled in June 2020, then it was planned to be in December, but the epidemic did not allow it.
The monument shows Bohdan Smoleń sitting on a chair at a table. The other chair in the monument is vacant and passers-by can sit on it. The monument was made according to the design of Piotr Socha.
The Friday unveiling of the monument was preceded by cabaret performances. The stage was performed, among others, by Krzysztof Daukszewicz, MoCarta Group, Cabaret Czesuaf and BIS Skipper Club.
At the climax, the material surrounding the Bohdan Smoleń monument was set on fire, so that, as intended by the organizers, the figure of the deceased artist emerged from the flames. The unveiling of the sculpture was accompanied by a fireworks display.
The originator of the commemoration of Bohdan Smoleń, as well as the organizer of the fundraiser for the construction of the monument, is Krzysztof Deszczyński, a longtime collaborator and friend of the artist.
Bohdan Smoleń was one of the artists most strongly associated with the capital of Greater Poland. He gained the greatest popularity when he performed with Zenon Laskowik in the Tey cabaret in Poznań. This cabaret was one of the symbols of the city in the 1970s and 1980s.
Smoleń appeared in films and on the stage – younger generations associate him with the role of the postman Edzia in the series “Świat according to Kiepskich”. In 2007, in Baranówek near Mosina (Wielkopolska Province), the artist established the Foundation for the Creation of Mr. Smoleń dealing with hippotherapy for children.
